    Extractive Chinese Spoken Document Summarization Using Probabilistic Ranking Models

    Abstract. The purpose of extractive summarization is to automatically select indicative sentences, passages, or paragraphs from an original document according to a certain target summarization ratio, and then sequence them to form a concise summary. In this paper, in contrast to conventional approaches, our objective is to deal with the extractive summarization problem under a probabilistic modeling framework. We investigate the use of the hidden Markov model (HMM) for spoken document summarization, in which each sentence of a spoken document is treated as an HMM for generating the document, and the sentences are ranked and selected according to their likelihoods. In addition, the relevance model (RM) of each sentence, estimated from a contemporary text collection, is integrated with the HMM model to improve the representation of the sentence model. The experiments were performed on Chinese broadcast news compiled in Taiwan. The proposed approach achieves noticeable performance gains over conventional summarization approaches

    The Contribution of Three-Dimensional Power Doppler Imaging in the Preoperative Assessment of Breast Tumors: A Preliminary Report

    Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine the value of 3D and 3D Power Doppler sonography in the detection of tumor malignancy in breast lesions and to find new diagnostic criteria for differential diagnosis. Methods. One hundred and twenty five women with clinically or mammographically suspicious findings were referred for 3D Power Doppler ultrasound prior to surgery. Histological diagnosis was conducted after surgery and compared with ultrasound findings. Sonographic criteria used for breast cancer diagnosis were based on a system that included morphological characteristics and criteria of the vascular pattern of a breast mass by Power Doppler imaging. Results. Seventy-two lesions were histopathologically diagnosed as benign and 53 tumors as malignant. Three-dimensional ultrasound identified 49 out of 53 histologically confirmed breast cancers resulting in a sensitivity of 92.4% and a specificity of 86.1% in diagnosing breast malignancy (PPV: 0.83, NPV:0.94). Conclusions. 3D ultrasonography is a valuable tool in identifying preoperatively the possibility of a tumor to be malignant

    Meta Comments for Summarizing Meeting Speech

    Abstract. This paper is about the extractive summarization of meeting speech, using the ICSI and AMI corpora. In the first set of experiments we use prosodic, lexical, structural and speaker-related features to select the most informative dialogue acts from each meeting, with the hypothesis being that such a rich mixture of features will yield the best results. In the second part, we present an approach in which the identification of “meta-comments ” is used to create more informative summaries that provide an increased level of abstraction. We find that the inclusion of these meta comments improves summarization performance according to several evaluation metrics.

    Automatic summarization of voicemail messages using lexical and prosodic features

    This article presents trainable methods for extracting principal content words from voicemail messages. The short text summaries generated are suitable for mobile messaging applications. The system uses a set of classifiers to identify the summary words with each word described by a vector of lexical and prosodic features. We use an ROC-based algorithm, Parcel, to select input features (and classifiers). We have performed a series of objective and subjective evaluations using unseen data from two different speech recognition systems as well as human transcriptions of voicemail speech

    Gender-based behavioral analysis for end-user development and the ‘RULES’ attributes

    This paper addresses the role of gender in End-User Development (EUD) environments and examines whether there are gender differences in performance and in correlations between performance and a set of behavioral attributes. Based on a review of the most prominent EUD-related behavioral Human Computer Interaction (HCI) theories, and the influence of gender on them, it attempts to classify all the gender related behavioral attributes influencing the end-users’ performance. Then, it theoretically selects a subset of these attributes, namely Risk-Perception, Usefulness-Perception,Learning Willingness, Ease-of-Use-Perception, and Self-Efficacy, presents an example application and conducts a basic evaluation testing. The proposed attributes (their initials form the word RULES) can form the basis for the design of EUD-oriented user modeling techniques for gender-neutral self-adaptive software EUD environments. © 2016, Springer Science+Business Media New York

    Engaging end-users in creating data-intensive mobile applications: A creative 'e-learning-by-doing' approach

    Engaging end-users in creative and experiential e-learning activities by giving them the 'right tools' can be viewed as a way to empower end-users in developing their own artifacts. The aim of this paper is to propose 'e-learning-by-developing', a creative learning-by-experience methodology, that can support end-users to develop data intensive mobile applications. The proposed learning approach aims to create a training model for the acquisition of knowledge and development of skills for database-driven applications, by promoting active participation of the-user in the development process. Preliminary experimental evaluation showed that end-users, with limited prior database knowledge and development background, were able to quickly and efficiently design a relational scheme and create a reusable database driven mobile application. © 2015 IEEE

    Paraneoplastic intrahepatic cholestasis in supradiaphragmatic classical hodgkin lymphoma successfully treated with brentuximab vedotin: A case report and review of the literature

    Background: Hepatic dysfunction in patients with classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is of multifactorial aetiology. Prompt evaluation with laboratory tests and imaging methods is sufficient for diagnosis in most cases. Intrahepatic cholestasis and vanishing bile duct syndrome (VBDS) may complicate cHL as rare paraneoplastic phenomena. Liver biopsy provides crucial evidence of cholestasis, and ductopenia, if present, confirms the diagnosis of VBDS. Case Report: We report on a cHL patient that presented with jaundice and bulky mediastinal disease and unfold the therapeutic dilemmas we confronted. Marked hyperbilirubinemia was successfully reversed with brentuximab vedotin (BV) at a dose of 1.2 mg/kg and the patient was subsequently treated with doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine (ABVD) at full doses, achieving complete metabolic response. A literature review of intrahepatic cholestasis in cHL is also presented based on currently available data with focus on treatment options and clinicopathologic associations. Conclusion: VBDS and intrahepatic cholestasis are rare and potentially fatal complications of cHL. Their prompt recognition and appropriate treatment can dramatically affect cHL patients’ outcome. BV, used at a reduced dose as a bridging therapy, should be considered as a high-priority treatment plan in these challenging cases. © 2021 International Institute of Anticancer Research.
